A possible extension to four Hyundai cars in connection with the arrival of Andreas Mikkelsen has raised fears about a recurrence of the recent dominance of Volkswagen in the world rally championship, according to AUTOSPORT.
Last Friday former racer VW tested the car i20. Negotiations between the Norwegian and Hyundai will continue, although the team is downplaying the possibility of signing of the contract.
From the South Korean company already has contracts with Thierry Neuville, Hayden Paddon and Dani Sordo for the next two years. Therefore, there is concern that the addition of the fourth rider, with experience of victories in WRС, make Hyundai unattainable for rivals in the standings manufacturers.
“Just in our sport ended a period of dominance for one team and you have to wonder, will favor its repetition, – quotes the AUTOSPORT the words of your source. If Mikkelsen has signed a contract with Hyundai, then everyone else will be hard to do something.
The market for pilots at the moment are pretty weak. We have a lot of riders sitting around and wanting to play, but not all of them are able to jump in the car and to perform at the highest level.
For WRC it would be better if Andreas moved to Citroen or Toyota it would be even good.”
According to rumors, Mikkelsen is also in talks with Toyota about a contract for the remainder of the season 2017 and 2018.
“We’re not the only one who is considering the candidacy of Mikkelsen – confirmed Hyundai team Manager Alain Penas. – Citroen no contract with Chris and Mick for the next season, so they are looking for options. The Toyota’s weak structure, they show good results, but every team wants to see in its composition a strong rider.
The M-Sport is Sebastien Ogier and Ott Tanak. Tanak is impressive, but perhaps he’s not good enough”.
Penas confirmed the possibility of using the fourth car, which Hyundai has been regularly exposed in the course of last season.
“We fielded a fourth car before and consider this question, – he continued. – Nothing is decided yet, it requires a lot of work and a serious budget. This may be last year’s car, but it’s very, very difficult.
For each individual car requires a trailer with all the spare parts. I would say that it is very expensive.”
Also the team Manager of Hyundai denied the assumption that Mikkelsen can bring a budget.
“Such commercial transactions will never be, he said. For clients we have a R5 car. Some teams rent their WRC cars, but Hyundai is not engaged”.
