Racer Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen harshly criticized the system of protection of the cockpit “halo” introduced in Formula 1 in mandatory in 2018.
It would seem that two weeks of tests in Barcelona, the fans and the pilots themselves could get used to the strange design. But the 20-year-old Dutchman, who was previously dissatisfied with the “halo”, gave a rather candid statement.

“The design looks just awful. I personally do not like – said Verstappen in an interview AutoHedbo. – Of course, I understand that they care about our safety, but the risk in our sport will always be.
In the end, it was possible to come up with something better. Imagine how beautiful it will look like cars of 2018, if you remove the “halo”. I’m not against measures to protect the cockpit, but at least worth to take a cue from LMP1, and we got some flip flops.
The introduction of a “halo” is a consequence of over-reacting to dangerous incidents. But look at MotoGP riders risk falling at the speed of 350 km/h we, in Formula 1, at least have seat belts and various protective structures. What to do? To build around riders frame?
Tragedies sometimes happen, people can die. You can get out of the shower, slip and fall, no one is immune from coming out of the house not to get hit by a car. What can you do? Let’s all be staying home and lying in bed motionless, like mummies. I understand the desire to improve safety, but accidents are part of life”.
