The national security Advisor of the FIA, David Lapworth spoke about the importance of a timely implementation of the system of protection of the cockpit “halo” in various formula categories.
In 2018, the concept will be used in the Formula 1 and Junior Championships F2. By the end of the year “halo” will appear in the electric series Formula E, and in 2020 is expected to be represented in most of the Championships on machines with open wheel.
“The introduction of “halo” in Formula 1 – is in itself a great achievement – said Lapworth in an interview with FIA Auto. – Involvement of people from different Motorsport disciplines will help even more. The more people can help in the dissemination of the concept and to convince the doubters of its performance, the better.
It is recognized that implementation is as important as innovation. Amazing that such leading formula one Championships as F1, contribute to the emergence of new solutions and help to expand the boundaries of security. But in Formula 1 during the race weekend, 22-24 speak of the pilot, whereas around the world there are more than a thousand races. So it is important to make the concept of a universal as soon as possible.
Now we perceive the HANS device for granted, but in order to achieve broad distribution to racing disciplines worldwide, it took ten years. One of the areas where we need to improve is shortening the time between development and implementation. This applies not only to Formula 1, but all other categories”.
