Head of Renault Sport’s Cyril Abitbul does not exclude that Jolyon Palmer will remain in the team for the season 2018. However, the British need to seriously improve compared to the first half of the season 2017, during which scored no points.
“If he will be able to reverse the situation, like last year, we will be ready to continue cooperation in the next season – said Abitbul in an interview with AUTOSPORT. The team needs stability. We wanted this when I signed the contract with Nico Hulkenberg, so did not try to change the pilots.
To Jolyon nothing is lost – everything is in his hands. He understands that his contract runs until the end of the year and the team evaluates possible options for the future.
In winter tests and in some races, Palmer looked good. It can go fast, does its job well and provides quality feedback. But at the same time, Jolyon made a lot of mistakes and missed a good opportunity. Of course, he also prevented problems with the reliability. All this has led to loss of confidence and inability to overcome the difficulties that can test any driver. This uncertainty was growing like a snowball, and eventually we got what you are now seeing.
I’m trying to protect Jolyon, to assure that the team fully supports him, and help gain confidence. But one day this will not be achieved”.
