Fernando Alonso spoke on present and future achievements of McLaren-Honda, hinting at his departure from the team after expiration of the contract.
The Spaniard said that he will remain in the team for the season in 2018 if the team starts winning since September, when he will decide about his future.
At the moment, the team from Woking occupies the last place in the Cup of designers: it is the only team that haven’t scored points in the campaign in 2017.
Recall that a valid contract of double world champion with McLaren expires at the end of the year.
When at a press conference in Montreal with Fernando asked that will keep him at McLaren for 2018 year, he said, “We have to win. If we start to win in September, when I will make a decision about your future, then I’ll stay”.
Alonso hinted that he sets unrealistic goals for the team in September, on astories said: “I mean, in June you can’t be 100% sure about the decision that you haven’t even started to think about it.
We all want to win. If you go back to the first question, I would like to give an example of the review Zach [brown] about Honda: this is exactly what he had to say.
Zach brown: Our patience runs out, and will soon have to make a decision
He wants to win and intends to do everything possible to McLaren had the opportunity to fight for victory. After three years of cooperation with Honda] we’re no closer to that goal. In order to change the situation, the team need a change.
The same applies to me. I joined this project because I wanted to once again become world champion. But we can’t fight for the championship. If you see that nothing changes, and do not have a competitive technology, perhaps you should move on to another project.
That’s all I can say now. But until I make a decision on his future in September or October, I can’t be 100% sure of his choice.”
