Head Sauber Moniz, Kaltenborn dispelled fears about the cooperation with Honda, despite all the problems the Japanese minders in recent years.
Next year the team from Hinwil as McLaren will use motors from Sakura. Many doubt the correctness of that decision, but Sauber are sure that Honda will step up.
Official: Honda will become a partner of Sauber 2018
“We should not jump to conclusions. No one knows what will happen in the future, – quotes Kaltenborn AUTOSPORT. We are absolutely sure that Honda will make progress and solve their problems. We have no doubt about that.
We were in a similar situation in 2014, when our engine lost serious power. But there was no point in starting to ask questions and criticize, because we knew that Ferrari is doing everything possible”.
Currently supports two Honda riders in the Junior series – Nobuharu Matsushita in F2 and Nirei of Fukushima in GP3. To the question about the possibility of working with a protégé of the Japanese company, Kaltenborn said: “In such a relationship you usually consult with the partner on such matters. But the final decision for the team. In any case, it’s too early to say.”
The head of Sauber also added that the decision on the termination of a long-standing partnership with Ferrari was not easy. A team of Hinwil made motors from Maranello from 1997 to 2005 and returned to cooperate with Scuderia in 2010.
“This is a difficult step, he continued Moniz. Together we have been through a lot, so this decision has an emotional component. Easy to say that we will stop working.
But Ferrari really helped us, especially when the team was bought from BMW [in late 2009], as it was a heavy period. Before, when our partner was another company Petronas, we collaborated a lot with Ferrari and did a great job on the development of fuel and lubricants. So this is a difficult step.”
