Appeared last week in the network image chassis MRT07 shed light on the features of the new F1 cars of season 2017…
The news of the demise of the Manor practically coincides with the forthcoming homologation of the new chassis the team.
The team has designed two models of the car and placed them on the base, whereas on the more they have not been able to – cash flow stopped, and payments to suppliers has not been implemented.
But based on the descriptions of the new models can make significant conclusions from the point of view of technology, and doing technical expert AUTOSPORT.com Matt Somerfield.
Looking at the rear end of the chassis, we can conclude that in the Manor decided to place the liquid-air radiator in the area between the fuel compartment and the anterior border of the power plant, following the practice of Mercedes the past three years.
You can also assume that the team made the decision to move here for the electronic part of the side pontoons, to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the chassis in the sidewalls.
The deltoid profile of the front wing meets all the requirements of new technical regulations, whereas in the neutral Central section it is complemented by the wedge-shaped profile.
Wide and low the tip of the nose cone has been shifted as far as possible in the area of the neutral section, and he no longer towers over the wing as before.
The location and geometry of the tip fairing occupied the minds of engineers since the term neutral section in 2009, as this element depends largely on the level of downforce and the profile of the air flow in the front of the chassis.
The front wing itself has been changed, taking into consideration the increased width of the element and the front wheels.
Updated the geometry of the wing creates a considerable size the tunnels for the air flow direction in the surrounding of the wheels, and this contributes to a number of new otkrytku on top of the wing, then as a cascade of l-shaped guides located closer to the Central axis.
This design first was used by the teams of Williams and Caterham on their FW36 chassis and CT05, respectively, but were updated by engineers Manor due to the increased wheel width and the need to direct the airflow away from them.
The geometry of the end plates of the front wing is clearly different expanding profile, to the same turtsevichi supplemented by special otkrytkami, directing the flow upwards, which also helps to optimize the “air track” from the wheel.
The main plane of the wing is divided into two parts and is supplemented by slots in the outlet region of the tunnel.
The geometry of the upper flaps were also changed – their tips converge, whereas the lower plane slightly curved upwards to come into contact with the top.
But in the new technical regulations, there are other requirements that can help engineers to optimize the aerodynamic efficiency of his new gear.
So, deltoid geometry of the side pontoons in the upcoming season will significantly increase the role of side deflectors, traditionally located in front of them.
For example, the models of the Manor can be seen that the three-dimensional baffles placed with a slant in front of the pontoons and connected to the bottom. At the same time, in its anterior part it extends down to the splitter, and made in the area of the slot help to improve the overall aerodynamics of the chassis.
As for the side pontoons, they were wider to allow engineers to play with the location of radiators and intercoolers to optimize the internal air flow profile.
It’s also hard not to notice the bulk aerodynamic lines at the front of the sidewalls extending from the cockpit through the shoulders of the pontoons and ending a few inches above the bottom. About such decisions, the teams used in the period from 2005 to 2008.
However, these contours are located further away from the surface of the sidewalls than in recent years.
The pontoons themselves gradually, but quickly taper to its back, while the outlet openings, it was decided to lift to improve aerodynamics.
The platform in front of the rear wheels has acquired two large l-shaped cutout with the aim to direct airflow from that area to the diffuser, which from now on will be hosted starting line, located in 175 mm in front of the axis of the rear wheels, not directly on it as it was before.
In the rear region of the chassis, you can welcome back the “shark fin”.
Shorter and oblique wing angles help in the season of 2017 will be designed to protect the rear wing from the disturbances of the air flow, which can become a real problem, given the lower placement of the whole structure.
Lower, wider and reclining rear wing still contains the slits in its anterior part, to take on the air flow even with the new curved geometry of the end plates.
Also don’t forget and open the blinds, first appeared on the cars of Toro Rosso and used by several teams last season – this solution is designed to offset the turbulence created by the leading edge of the wing.
Due to lack of financial capacity chassis with index MRT07 could stand in front of the fans with only minor modifications compared to richer competitors, but even seen on the pictures is enough to understand how serious aerodynamic innovations can we expect in the upcoming season…
