On planned for next weekend the stage of the WTCC in Morocco was to take place the premiere of Joker community in the world turinge, but the leadership of the championship decided to postpone innovation until the June stage in Portugal.
Initially, the League wanted to introduce the Joker circles the type of rallycross in two of the three city stages in order to increase the entertainment races.
Last year in Marrakesh, the riders were able to overtake, and one of the most memorable moments was the maneuver of the former racer Lada Valenta South in an attempt to get past James Thompson from Munnich Motorsport. Overtaking was unsuccessful, and the victory went in the hands of Tom Coronel of ROAL Chevrolet.
Last year Portugal also had problems with overtaking.
“We offered three options for FIA Joker-circles – said the championship promoter Francois Ribeiro in an interview with TouringCarTimes. Track in Marrakech pleased narrow so we jointly decided not to implement the innovation at this stage. We would like to avoid incidents in the first time.”
Thus, in this season’s WTCC drivers will be able only once to drive the Joker-circles – on the road to Vila real in Portugal, since the third famous city stage in Macau shall not be altered.
Joker-circles are kind of new to circuit racing, although they have already appeared in the Argentine touring car championship for Super 2000 TC.
“I want to give riders the opportunity to determine the strategy, and if someone of them would be faster then waiting for his reward, explained Ribeiro. – Permanent race tracks can’t do this, because riders will have to wait for the Joker lap before you commit to overtaking.
It may have a negative impact on the show and the essence of the competition touring cars. The FIA gave the green light to conduct the Joker-circles on the permanent race tracks, but I immediately refused only on urban roads, period!”
