Jari-Matti Latvala admitted that in 2016 has tried to copy the style of racing his former teammate at Volkswagen’s Sebastien Ogier.
Last year was the worst in his career Finn in the WRC: he finished the campaign only on the sixth place in the overall standings, losing to the world champion Ogier 156 points.
Jari-Matti Latvala said about the impossibility of working with Ogier
“Everything went wrong, – said Jari-Matti in an interview AUTOSPORT.com. – I didn’t win because he was trying to adopt the driving style of Sebastien. I was confused, trying to do everything like him.
I was looking at the information I gave my engineers, and at the same time watched as Ogier used the brakes. I tried to change everything and do what he did.”
For four years, when they were teammates, Ogier won the rally of 31 and four times became the champion of the world. Latvala, in turn, won during this time period a total of nine victories.
Finn admits that he didn’t have to copy the style of the Frenchman.
“At the end of last year, I was confused. The situation is complicated by – continued Jari-Matti. – I just didn’t know what to do, and asked myself: “How can I fly the car?” I tried to copy Ogier. That’s why I had no chance to succeed in Volkswagen.
I couldn’t concentrate on work because constantly looked behind him. I forgot about his own style and switched to it.”
We will remind, after Volkswagen left the WRC at the end of 2016, Latvala signed a contract with Toyota, and Ogier moved to M-Sport.
Interestingly, in the opening stage of the season 2017 in Monte Carlo Sebastien finished first, and Jari-Matti took second place.
