The reigning winner of the world rally championship Sebastien Ogier chooses between two options for a career in the championship.
As expected, the Frenchman can spend next season driving a Ford Fiesta RS of M-Sport. Other obvious choices there, but, according to rumors, the return of the Ogier in a Citroen or even a speech, driving a private car, a Volkswagen Polo R.
“Now the situation more or less clear – said Ogier in an interview with AUTOSPORT. I want to race, but I can’t say with certainty what will be released at the start of the Rally Monte Carlo. Yes, in this you can be completely sure, not having the contract?
I want to get a car, driving where you will be able to win, it is important for my motivation. In addition, I want stability. I have the opportunity to sign a contract for one or two years. It’s not the money but the potential. Currently I have two options”.
Four-time world champion also confirmed rumors that after testing the Yaris WRC he refused to go to Toyota.
The video of the tests can be seen as Ogier was not easy to control the car in difficult weather conditions.
“I agree that the car didn’t look very good on asphalt, but on gravel fared better – commented Ogier. – It was very slippery, which, of course, prevented to assess the potential, but even in such circumstances, you can easily understand what is wrong with this car.”
Head of M-Sport Malcolm Wilson does not lose hope to sign the contract with Ogier and expects to conclude an agreement by the end of this week if everything goes well.
“We will continue talks, discussing a number of aspects. But I think that very soon we will see how everything goes,” he said.
Ogier, in turn, admitted he was impressed by the enthusiasm of the boss of M-Sport.
“Malcolm made it clear that his priority is to work with us. It’s definitely plays into his hands, – he said. It is always nice when people know exactly what they want, and willing to work with you.”
Talk about the fact that the VW Polo WRC in 2017 will still appear on the rally tracks of the world championship next season is gaining momentum. As stated by the head of Motorsport division of Volkswagen Group, Wolfgang Dürheimer, the main priority is the search for funding.
“I’m working on it and has always supported the idea of using the machine, despite the departure of the factory team, he said. The main problem is that every project costs money. But if all goes well, we will in any case help the contractor VW Motorsport in the operation and development of cars. Regardless of the proposed terms, we will share our experience.
I hope that the deal will be concluded, the team will start in Monte Carlo and will spend the rest of the season. That would be amazing: imagine a team is deemed the underdog, but fans happy with her appearance. If everything is done correctly, you can get an incredible story”.
