The Toyota driver Sebastien Buemi has admitted that a small advantage to his team over the Porsche in the race “6 hours of Silverstone” scared team.
Buemi won the victory with their companions on the crew Kazuki Nakajima and Anthony Davidson thanks to an effective attack on Brandon Hartley from Porsche.
Toyota was the leader in qualifying but in the race the Porsche was not going to concede a lot to the Japanese team’s pace.
Hartley kept close enough to the machine at number 8 in the final stages of the race, and after all drove in eight seconds, thanks to a pit stop with refuelling, but was not able to keep Buemi on fresher tyres.
“We expected that we would be a little faster. So we’re a little bit scared the way things are. said Buemi. – We need to work better, because they were much faster than us at the pit stop.
As long as you have the advantage of speed, it’s okay, but with refueling and tire change, need to think of something.
The end of the race the car was quick, thanks to fresh rubber, and we knew that our advantage.”
Buemi commented on the overtaking Hartley: “It was one of the few opportunities to come forward, because they were faster on the straights. Brandon kindly left me enough space.
We have not won, it is nice to start the season with the victory.”
According to the head of the Porsche team Andreas Seidl’s, to see two of the 919 on the podium was to compare the victory in the race.
Hartley acknowledged that retain Buemi was impossible, so was pleased with second place.
“We lost only six seconds, this is an excellent result, which we can be satisfied,’ said Hartley. Our aerodynamic configuration is not suitable for this route.
I was a bit surprised by the pace Toyota in qualifying, but we have focused on the race pace because it was our only chance.
The safety car definitely helped us, and at the end when Sebastien change to new tires, we decided to try to take first place and so to finish.
We fought, but I couldn’t make him wait any longer”.
