Toyota Motorsport Director Pascal Vasselon said that the decision of the factory team in the LMP1 to put the third car in the “24 hours of Le Mans”, as well as on the previous day marathon stage in the Spa, carries a financial risk.
“In the case of multiple incidents, we can be in a difficult financial situation and at some point will be faced with the need of economy”, – quotes the AUTOSPORT Vasselon.
This Vasselon noted that the budget of a factory team LMP1 remained at the level of previous years and a third car at Le Mans will be exhibited through savings in other areas of the programme of the Japanese manufacturer in the WEC.
“We were forced to operate within our budget – additional bailouts did not happen, he explained. We have cut several items of the development programme, while avoiding a negative impact on the team and at the same time agreeing to certain financial risks”.
Toyota for the first time after returning in 2012, will put in the “24 hours of Le Mans” third car. As Vasselon, this decision pushed the company failures in 2014 and 2016.
“Twice in the last three years, we were close to victory at Le Mans and each time was the same scenario: in the first case prevented the accident, and the second – problems with reliability. It pushed us to the use of third cars,” he added.
