Four-time champion of the “Paris-Dakar” Cyril Neveu on Honda and two-time champion of the rally-RAID Hubert Auriol on the Cagiva were the main contenders for triumph in the motorcycle class in 1987.
In that year, Auriol took the lead in the rally-RAID, winning four stages. Hubert was the leader in the category, but for 20 km before the finish of the penultimate stage, he fell from the motorcycle.
The result of the painful fall, the Frenchman broke both ankles, but found the strength again to “ride” Cagiva and get to the finish line stage! Immediately after the end of the competitive segment Oriol fizzled rally, paying tribute to the Neva.
“Cyril is the best. I’m done with motorcycles,” said Hubert.
In 1987, the Neva won the rally “Paris-Dakar” for the fifth time. As for Oriol, he managed to recover after severe injuries, and in 1992 became the first participant who won in the category of SUVs after the triumph in the motorcycle class.
