Two-time world champion WRC Carlos Sainz-senior believes that the amendments in the technical regulations, introduced on the eve of the start of “Dakar-2017”, have a negative impact on the results of the Peugeot factory team.
The Spaniard completed the first stage of the prestigious rally-RAID in fourth place. However, he said that the new Peugeot 3008DKR significantly weaker than the Toyota Hilux, which is the leader of the first day of the competition, Nasser al-Attiyah.
The new rules state that on cars with drive on one axis, which include Peugeot, the diameter of the washer-restrictor must be reduced by 1 mm. moreover, all-wheel drive cars allowed to increase the diameter of the washer-restrictor by 2 mm.
“Obviously, because of the restrictor we now have less power than last year, – quotes the words of Sainz Sr. AUTOSPORT.com. Now Toyota 40-50 horsepower more than us. This despite the fact that they were strong last year.
I was opposed to Nasser on the Baja Spain and Morocco from the restrictor, and he was faster than me in both cases.
Now they have two extra millimeters, but our restrictor decreased by 1 mm.”
When Carlos asked if such changes in the rules are unfair in relation to the Peugeot, he said: “Absolutely. I think so.
Two years ago we lost on these roads for two seconds.. No one focused on this, even Peugeot. The team did not ask to change the rules and not told that on cars with drive on one axis, it is impossible to win.
We have designed a new car, came here and won. And then they suddenly change the rules. Cars with all-wheel drive won 10, 12, 14 years without changes in the regulations. It is difficult to understand why the decision was made to change the rules”.
