Nine years ago at Interlagos hosted one of the most dramatic season finales in the history of Formula 1, when the destiny of the title literally decided in the last corner of the final lap.
Fought for the championship of Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa, but almost on a par with them in the chronicle of the crazy finish came Timo Glock, speaking for Toyota. In my career in Formula 1, German only a few times rose to the podium and seldom pretended to a high position, but he is in that rainy day in Sao Paulo November 2, 2008 unwittingly influenced the outcome of the battle for the title.
In the last laps, when once again for the race on the Interlagos rain, Glock was one of the few who dared to reach to the finish on slicks. Contenders for the title in this number were not, but if the Mass after the pit stop, remained the leader, but the Hamilton just left behind Glock. Two laps from the finish position of the Briton in the championship became a close-to-critical – after overtaking Sebastian Vettel he was the sixth, and that’s to win the championship wasn’t enough. For the second year in a row, the McLaren driver was on the verge of losing the title that was almost in his hands.
The initiative returned to the British only in the last corner when he slowed down ahead of the Glock and took such an important fifth position. Until now, the conspiracy theorists accuse Timo of assistance.
“The reaction of many fans was very mixed. It seems, among fans, there are racists who do not like the victory of Lewis Hamilton”, – quotes the Glock publication Speed Week.
A few years ago, even Felipe Massa, previously defended the rider Toyota has revised his point of view.
“Definitely, one German messed me up,” said the Brazilian, who did not have a single point to the championship.
As told by the Glock, every year he gets on Twitter 100-150 messages charges.
“Year after year repeats one and the same story,” he wrote jokingly.
But was there a conspiracy? Because on the last lap the rain intensified, and to go on slicks was harder.
“Lewis is still ahead of me, regardless of, whether I wanted them or not,” says the Glock.
“On the last lap it started raining heavily. We did it in 1.20, and a Glock, and Jarno Trulli – 1.44” – said Fernando Alonso, who finished second.
But hardly ever arguments on this topic end…
“I’m looking forward to anniversary in 2018!” – was written as a joke Glock on Twitter.
