Fernando Alonso said that the main reason for the failure of the Honda during the cooperation with McLaren was that before each season, the Japanese manufacturer has begun work on a power plant from scratch, changing its concept.
For three years, Honda was never able to construct a reliable and competitive engine.
The team from Woking has decided to terminate the contract with Honda at the end of the season 2017. In 2018, McLaren will receive motors Renault, and Honda will be the supplier for Toro Rosso.
“I think the most problems we have encountered during the winter tests, because before each new season we started from scratch, – quotes Alonso AUTOSPORT.com. – We had to catch up during the season.
The first race of the calendar in Australia, China and Bahrain were always tests for us. By the end of the year we were able to bring the power plant to the mind that gave hope for a successful start next season and reducing the gap from the leaders, but this did not happen.
Before each new season, we chose a new approach to the structure of the engine, changed the location of turbines and other parts. This significantly slowed down development and progress.”
