The Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas took his second career victory, keeping the onslaught of Sebastian Vettel on the last lap.
At the start, Finn realized the advantage of pole position and stayed ahead. The reaction Bottas was so good that his neighbor in the front row of Sebastian Vettel even suspect the false start. Racing Directorate of the FIA examined the action Valtteri, but found no violations.
In the future, but who, unfortunately, was fined is Daniil Kvyat. The Russians played a couple of positions on the starting line, but made a mistake under braking and knocked Fernando Alonso with max Verstappen. Both went down, but the pilot Toro Rosso continued the race and got a penalty fare on the pit lane.
If Bottas and Vettel retained his position after the start, here is Kimi Raikkonen not only skipped ahead of Daniel ricciardo, but even Romain Grosjean.
As for Lewis Hamilton, a Brit, started eighth due to a penalty for changing the gearbox, has risen only one position, complete at the expense of gathering Verstappen.
Fast enough race came to a calm and steady rhythm. Bottas, printed the best circles one by one, rapidly pulled away from Vettel, who already by the tenth round ahead by more than three seconds, whereas the German the same was ahead of ricciardo.
Unlike the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan two weeks ago, the race was full of overtaking and in this respect were more similar to stages in Melbourne and Sochi. Hamilton managed to get ahead of a slower Grosjean and Perez, however, for Raikkonen was stuck for a dozen laps.
It Lewis the first of the leaders went to pit stop. It happened on the 31st lap, and the Briton moved to the softest part of the tire Ultrasoft. Behind him was followed by ricciardo, but on the 34th, it was the turn of Vettel. Bottas and Raikkonen to the maximum tightened my stop.
The first of the two Finns at the end of 41st circle stopped Valtteri, who, naturally, returned to the track ahead of Vettel. Kimi held the track for another three laps, but no advantage by such tactics has not received and returned only a fifth, being even four seconds behind Hamilton.
The last of the peloton who went for fresh tires, was Felipe Massa. End of the line and the Brazilian rose to sixth place, and went ninth, ahead of teammate lance Stroll. Given that started the pilots Williams 17-m and 18-m, their breakthrough in the top ten was one of the main surprises of the race.
Intrigue final part of the race was the weather. The track began to hang around the clouds, and the team has warned drivers about the probability of rain in the last laps.
The rain has bypassed the Red bull Ring side, but the denouement of the race without it was intense. Hamilton to the last rounds caught up with ricciardo in the battle for third place, but most importantly, Vettel has completely closed the gap on Bottas. On the final lap the two leaders went with a difference of just over half a second. One single error Valtteri could change everything, but like on the Grand Prix of Russia, Finn did not flinch and stayed ahead.
Interestingly, if in Sochi, Bottas was ahead of the same Vettel by 0,617 seconds, this time on 0,658 seconds.
In the battle for bronze Riccardo ahead of Hamilton, despite a sharp point and a half laps to go.
The top four were only six seconds. Only behind Raikkonen, Hamilton, even the losers 12 seconds.
Grosjean achieved his best result of the season, finishing sixth. Behind the Frenchman the race was completed by the partners of the Force India Sergio Perez and Esteban Windows. Mass and Stroll left at the end of the first ten. And lance only half a second ahead of Jolyon Palmer, who has never been close to score the first points of the season and strengthen his position in the Renault. At least the British are ahead of teammate Nico Hulkenberg, who became only the 13th.
Kvyat could do nothing after a failed start of the race and took the last 16-th place at the finish.
With Alonso and Verstappen were out of the race Carlos Sainz and Kevin Magnussen, both due to technical problems.
