Mercedes could face big challenges in the upcoming Grand Prix of Canada and Azerbaijan, if not solve the problem, which appeared in Monaco.
Last weekend, Mercedes are unable to adapt to the super-soft tyres Pirelli, which Lewis Hamilton not passed the third qualifying segment.
His teammate Valtteri Bottas took third place, but the race was lost as the pilots of Ferrari and Daniel ricciardo of Red Bull Racing, and the Hamilton arrived to finish only the seventh. Now the Briton behind Sebastian Vettel 25 points in the overall championship.
“We work to achieve the desired balance of the car, especially in slow corners – explained Bottas. – When the back is not quite stable, the car feels a slight understeer, which increases the temperature of the front tyres.
At high speed cornering the temperature is noticeably higher. It seems Ferrari both axes work without problems, unlike us.”
The problem is compounded by the fact that Mercedes already has such a speed advantage as before.
Solving problems is still missing, so in the upcoming stages in Baku and Montreal, which requires much less downforce, the situation for the “Silver arrow” may be repeated.
“We need to understand how the rubber behaves when you reduce the downforce of the car, – said the technical Director of Force India Andrew green. – We have not yet experimented with such settings.
Traditionally, the stage in Montreal are quite complex, and Baku, I think, would not be easier. There is smooth asphalt and a long straight, which transfer energy to tires will not be easy. For all this weekend will be another test.”
Hamilton has won five times in Canada but, despite this, the predicted difficulties with his team.
“We will finally be able to attack only when you understand exactly how to work with Ultrasoft rubber”, – summed up the British.
