Head of Renault Sport’s Cyril Abitbul said in an interview with AUTOSPORT that the French manufacturer was pleased with the performance capacity of the new engine.
For the season-2017 Renault presented a fully reworked motor, to try to get ahead of Mercedes and Ferrari in the fight for the title.
Despite the reliability issues associated with the operation of the system of energy recovery (ERS) that have surfaced during the tests in Barcelona, the leadership of Renault is confident in his progress.
“I think we are now on the way to the target, and assuming no reliability issues and did surpass our expectations – said Abitbul. – We unveiled a completely redesigned architecture of the power plant, including ERS. Our problems were to be expected because to achieve reliability in such circumstances is always difficult.
The good news is that all the efforts were not in vain, and the capacity to fully accomplish the needed results.
The test we are not so often tested these settings as I tried more to focus on the more relevant issue for us reliability. Nevertheless, we commend the final motor power”.
The first Grand Prix of the season in Australia in Renault have to decide on the exact engine configuration.
“In Melbourne, can happen anything, so we try to make sure that everything was in our favor – continued Abitbul. – I think we have everything under control, but do not forget how difficult it is to track it all down in the complicated mechanisms of the current power plants. Before Melbourne, we have something to decide, and these decisions will affect both the starting order and reliability.
We are in a difficult situation, which is extremely important to stay focused and not take anything for granted.”
