Sauber racer Pascal Wehrlein explained the decision to skip the Grand Prix of Australia and stressed that it is not the recurrence of a back injury.
Because of the accident in the Race of Champions in late January, the German missed the first preseason tests in Barcelona. In the second tests, he was back behind the wheel, but never traveled more than ten laps in a row.
Before the race weekend in Melbourne Wehrlein again underwent a medical examination and obtained a permit from the FIA, however, after Friday’s workout I decided to opt out of further participation.
“Everything is connected. Due to a back injury I couldn’t train as intense as I wanted. So this weekend, I feel uncomfortable, – quotes AUTOSPORT Wehrlein. – I got injured somewhere nine weeks ago and tried to do everything to properly prepare for the start of the season. Of course, now I have to catch up.
I felt all right, but not on the race distance. Yesterday for long stretches this was especially noticeable in comparison with tests and short series of circles”.
Of wehrlein replaced Antonio Giovinazzi, which showed 20-th time in the third training session.
