The Mercedes team has used a bold approach in the design of the clutch on the car of 2017 to help Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri bottas to the better start in the race in the upcoming season, according to AUTOSPORT.
In the off-season, the FIA has made additional adjustments to the start procedure – was introduced by new constraints in a linear control system the torque that will require riders greater precision of action on the starting grid.
In addition, there were presented new requirements in the field of moving and arrangement of the paddles, so drivers couldn’t use the fingers when looking for breakpoints.
Was also limited the maximum boundaries of movement of a petal clutch, which can move a maximum of 80 mm.
In between the petal clutch and any other control element on the steering wheel must be light in the range of 50 mm. the Only exception is the location of a kind of stop mechanism which limits the movement of the hand of the pilot in finding the correct position of the petal.
While teams like Ferrari continued to use their previous year’s solutions – with a single elongated petal clutch – Mercedes chose the stop mechanism.
The decision of the “Silver arrows” is a concept with two holes for fingers. This design will allow drivers to use a petal clutch in much larger borders, which should theoretically help in the search for the optimum bite and, therefore, it is better to start.
