Former F1 pilot, and now an analyst with Sky Sports Martin Brandl believes that McLaren has no other choice but to continue to cooperate with Japanese manufacturer Honda, whose engines broke down in each of the eight days of pre-season tests in Barcelona.
Yesterday in a press there was an information that the team from Woking have already been in contact with Mercedes to test the waters regarding a potential transaction for the supply of the power plant starting in 2018.
McLaren has had preliminary talks with Mercedes?
However, Brandl, speaking for McLaren in 1994, believes that the team must respect the contract with the manufacturer.
“They can’t leave Honda, but only if Honda did not want to leave itself and will not leave team fat cheque, as it was with Brawn GP, – quotes the words of Martin Daily Mail. But now Honda and McLaren are involved in the overall process, both from a technical and from a financial point of view. They need to find a way out of the situation.
I assume that the current problem Honda will not be able to solve quickly, so the first few races of the new season will be painful for McLaren, while Honda will find a solution. McLaren needs to compete with Red Bull Racing, not to mention the teams-middle peasants. The sport needs a strong McLaren”.
