The pilot of Renault Jolyon Palmer was left extremely disappointed with the qualification in Melbourne, following which he became the slowest rider.
Lewis Hamilton won the pole position in Melbourne
In the second free practice Briton broke his RS17, although he did not complain about the car.
On Saturday practice Palmer was 19th, and in the first segment of qualifying was closed, Jolyon lost to 19th place lance Stroll more than one second.
“During the first quick attempt on the machine there is a problem with the fuel, said Jolyon. Second round – the only round for the weekend, I drove with low fuel in the tanks and Ultrasoft – was terrible.
Yesterday I drove all four laps, but felt the car. Then followed the accident. I have to thank the team for the fact that it restored the machine, but the qualification was a disaster.
I lost the second to my best lap in the first practice session. It’s a nightmare. Brakes worked terribly, the balance is terrible as well, and the grip”.
His teammate Nico Hulkenberg showed 12th time in qualifying.
“The first qualification of the new season was solid for us, – said Niko. – We did not have a fraction of a second to pass in the third segment. This goal was achievable, but during my fast lap in the second segment, the balance of the car and the traction left much to be desired.
It is difficult to predict what awaits us tomorrow. You can say one thing: competition in the middle of the peloton is very serious. The race should get interesting. Our goal is conquest points”.
