The new Chairman of the Formula 1 chase Carey spoke about the reasons why the company Liberty Media so hastily decided to get rid of the presence in the governing body of the sport to Bernie Ecclestone.
After 40 years of the actual reign in Formula 1, the new owners of the commercial rights, in fact, said 86-year-old Englishman at the door, although the company initially advised chase to leave Bernie in the governance structure through 2020.
In an interview with the Times newspaper, Carey explained such a sharp change of mood against Ecclestone.
“I tried to evaluate objectively and make a decision based on what I’ve seen and heard, not to go on about their instincts,’ said the American. Presentiment told me that such a sport as Formula 1, may not be in the hands of one person, and Bernie for many decades in this vein and ran the championship. I saw and understood that he is exclusively in control of every decision.
It was difficult to hope that after so many years spent at the helm, people will be able to change your approach. I mean not some small change and a complete departure from the old tenets of sports management. And the more we realized that we would have to change the entire structure as a whole, the less chance remained with Bernie to stay with us.
I understand that it was difficult to accept that, because the Formula 1 was his life. And I have great respect for Ecclestone. But we’re going to manage the sport in a completely different manner.”
