Three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton did not hide the delight from new cars Mercedes W08 after the first day of testing in Barcelona, which he completed on the first line.
“I am very pleased with the whole team – the car looks fantastic, said Hamilton in an interview with Sky Sports News HQ. – The impressions are great, although many aspects can and should be added.
But for the first day everything went fine. We drove a lot of laps, and the car looks incredibly good. So I’m happy.”
Showed the best time on the first day, Hamilton confirmed the view that Mercedes are the favourites of season 2017. But, according to the Briton, in high expectations is not surprising.
“First, early in the season, you always expect a lot, he said. – Secondly, we are the Champions of the world. And thirdly, our machine is 1000 times better than the rest. So it’s expected”.
In the offseason said a lot about the high physical loads, driving new cars, but Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas drove for two two race distance in Barcelona.
“It’s a better car in comparison with cars of yesteryear. Downforce is much more speed in the turns is much higher. Load increased, but it is a good challenge for the drivers, Lewis said. – On the entrance to turn things are hard, on the body are large overload, even the head to keep challenging. The physical requirements are much higher.”
However, Hamilton again expressed his point of view about the fact that the new machines will be difficult to overtake.
“A couple of times I was behind other cars, and chase them was difficult, explained Lewis. – The tires are so hard that almost no wear. You can go and go.
So, most likely, the most preferred tactics in the race will be one stop in the pits. The level of degradation is less and therefore there will be less overtaking. This is my personal opinion, although I could be wrong. We’ll see.”
