The pilot of McLaren Fernando Alonso believes that the peak level of popularity Formula 1 came out in the 2000s, not in the era of rivalry between Alain Prost with Ayrton Senna.
“At the time [of Senna and Simple] F1 was very boring, – quotes the Spaniard AUTOSPORT.com. – If you now view the race, 85 -, 88-or 92-octane, you’ll fall asleep, because for the victory competed only two pilots McLaren.
The pilot, coming in fourth place was lost to the circle, and the distance between cars was 25 seconds. To finish do not reach ten machines, because the reliability of the equipment in those years left much to be desired.
Now television ratings are falling, as it was boring in the 80s in the days of Senna and Simple. They too were saving fuel and tyres. Then it was as boring as now.”
Alonso believes that the peak producers occurred in the 2000s.
“I think that in that period of F1 was significantly increased, continued Fernando. – The sport has come a manufacturers like BMW, Toyota and others. Television ratings were high, and the stands filled with fans.
We opened up F1 to new countries, speaking in Korea, India, Singapore, and Spain, and all had two races. This was the peak point. I guess we didn’t realize it. But while costs have increased, technology evolved, and some manufacturers left the sport.”
In addition, the double world champion believes that the F1 racers begin to accept only after they finish their careers.
“When you retire, you immediately become an idol, and while competing, you criticize, he said. – After a career people feel good – look at Felipe [Massa] and [Mark] Webber.
The great Champions of the 80s also became idols. A new generation of pilots, such as [Lewis] Hamilton, [Sebastian] Vettel will become idols for children who are now in karting”.
Alonso routinely criticized the current era of F1, but the Spaniard is hopeful that the situation will change for the better with the new regulations in 2017.
“Resources, budgets and technologies that are used in modern F1, given the opportunity to design fantastic cars – said Fernando. – However, we do not use it, because modern machines are too slow, and they have no clutch.
We sit in the cockpit of a single machine, but it seems that this is a GT car.
I think that the new regulations will increase the entertainment and satisfies the drivers, because now we will feel the grip, which will allow fast cornering”.
